this conceptual painting is created as a pseudo-monochrome work using masking tape on canvas. it is a momenti mori for an artist and the fragility of life in its tacit symbolism... the materials involved here represent the short breaths of life like a samuel beckett novel...

The artist, qi peng, writes:

This particular work delighted a private collector (a fellow FAAN artist) in Stockton. Ironically this fall I was going to focus on finding gallery representation in either NYC (my hometown) or LA and so far, collectors in Cali area are more attuned to my loose style (either that or Utah is closer?)...

I am appreciative about this work being adopted after two shows (since I started my professional art career last October) and that its sly humor is being appreciated by a private collector whose family can find more humor.

BTW, I'm working on a series of duct tape (masking tape is cool looking but only archival when I mix it with a layer of acrylic for preserving it) paintings this summer while my conceptual photography is on hiatus. Also a curator at OK Harris when I visited NYC last fall really dug the piece and said that I ought to be repped by a gallery in either Chelsea or Williamsburg... no luck so far! argh?

also much love to Eva Hesse. You didn't care whether your works were archival but wanted self-expression most of all. You are awesome and I dream of creating more fragile pieces...
