I am pursuing a degree in art conservation, and was initially drawn to this piece because of the issues surrounding inpainting/outpainting, authorship, and artist's intent. Decisions regarding these issues inform much of my work, and this piece resonated as a witty take on how we construct art.
After an exchange of emails with the artist, I discovered we shared a similar attachment to photographs as representations of people, places, and states of being that have been lost. Niki was kind enough to send me the work, and it has taken a place among my other favorite things.
