Grace Markman
I was born in Paterson New Jersey. My B.A. in Studio Art is from Fordham University and I hold an M.F.A. in painting from Bard College. I have exhibited my work for over twenty years in numerous groups shows both upstate and in New York City. I have been awarded artist residencies at Yaddo and Blue Mountain Center. My drawings were included in “ Winter Selections 2001” at The Drawing Center. I had my first one person show in New York City, “Squirm”, in the Spring of 2003 at Holland Tunnel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. My second show at Holland Tunnel, “ Rainbow Twist”, was in the fall of 2005. My home and studio are in Brooklyn.
This is a pink project; the background of this series is the color of interior flesh. I am painting the body as vehicle; travelling uncertainly, ungrounded but definitely moving forward. These vehicles rumble forward toward unknown and unexpected places. These forms are unbalanced, one-wheeled, precarious structures; often with blinding searchlights, steaming engines, and ejecting fluid from their backend.
This project started with the watercolors. They were a way of generating new imagery quickly, directly and with many
possibilities. They launched me into the oil paintings. I worked on larger and smaller paintings simultaneously. Imagery was erased, reconfigured in an experimental, playful manner. This allowed me to translate the freedom and openness of the watercolors to my oil paintings. Clearly visible brushstrokes and the use of strong color helped me to give these paintings a sense of vibration and movement. In addition to working in pairs, these paintings slowly evolved as a group. The solitary vehicles giving rise to vehicles moving in opposite directions, nearing collision or following similar paths.
