Maria Stabio was born and raised in San Francisco. She received her BFA in painting from Boston University's College of Fine Arts. Upon returning to the Bay, she continued to develop her body of work; paintings of domestic interiors rendered in monochromatic light. The paintings portray spaces not occupied by people but, rather, by the traces that they have left behind. The absence of the space's occupants allows the viewer to escape into the painting and enter the life of its inhabitants firsthand. Because the paintings are open-ended in this manner, they push the viewer to explore, investigate, and make his or her own interpretations about the personalities and habits of these absent individuals. Ultimately, these spaces have exposed questions about the definition of home. How do people choose to live their lives? Is the home an extension of ourselves or merely a container of possessions?

Maria Stabio has shown her work locally, is held in private West Coast collections, and has been published in online and print journals. She is attending the MFA graduate program at Columbia University. Please visit her website to see more of her work.
