Suzan Shutan
Hamden, CT
born 1953 USA
Working site specifically, I approach each work as drawing in space. Motivated by the function, architecture and activity of a place, I try to conjoin two with three dimensional elements. The narrative, which waivers between literal and abstract, works as folklore in that it is intended as social commentary.
Suzan Shutan received a A.R.T. grant (Artist Resource Trust) from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, an Artslink International CEC Partners grant for Warsaw Poland, an Artist Fellowship from Art Matters and two Connecticut Commission on the Arts Fellowships. She has been an artist in residence at Yaddo, Bemis Foundation, and will be in residence at Proyecto Ace in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2008. Suzan Shutan has an MFA from Rutgers University, Mason Gross, New Brunswick, NJ, a BFA from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA and currently is an Artist Mentor in the Graduate Art Program of Transart Institute, Austria and teaches sculpture at the Housatonic Community College in CT. Her work is many permanent collections including The University of Freiburg, Germany, The Swedish Archives, Bjarred, Sweden, Villa Taverna Foundation, NY, Rhode Island College, Sacred Heart University and the Housatonic Museum.
