Austin Thomas
New York-based artist Austin Thomas builds structures known as perches which are both functional and aesthetic objects that invite viewers to experience art in ways that extend beyond the object itself.
Monumentality breaks down and collapses into its constituent parts in Thomas’s drawings and collages. Her drawings are not sketches for sculpture, although they are are nearly architectural in form and sculptural in shape. She merges a retro-palette of mint greens, buttery yellows, and glossy oranges with the subject matter of outdoor gardens, imaginary patios, models and plans.
Thomas is a recipient of a Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program, an LMCC studio residency, and Public Arts Fund Commission. Her work has been featured at The Drawing Center, Murray Guy, The Sculpture Center, Debs & Co., Sara Meltzer Gallery, Art in General (all in NYC), and at the Corcoran Biennial, Washington, DC.
