Danielle Dimston
I have always wanted to be an artist but was afraid I had nothing to say. I have learned that in living there is a lot to say.
I have the requisite list of hopes and desires that come from cartoons and fairy tales, from books and music. Every story – from Adam and Eve to Frankenstein, every song – from Joni Mitchell to Miles Davis, is about how we relate to each other, how wanting to love and be loved is part of living.
And then there is beauty. And that seems like another topic entirely. There is temporary beauty: a sunset, fireworks, spring and more long-lasting beauty that comes from the comfort of knowing and loving.
I work in circles. My studio is a circle of projects and surfaces and I travel from interest to interest. It may seem that I have very different ideas going on but I have to trust the process and, in that, I am hopeful that I will create the in-between pieces and that the connections will become more apparent.
In the meantime, I try to capture my life, the visual equivalent of what it is to be me.
