Giovanni Garcia-Fenech
My paintings are improvisational; I never use preliminary drawings, layouts or source materials. Instead, the pieces follow a set of several self-imposed working rules that provide some parameters to work within. These rules are visual in nature and can be perceived by a careful viewer.
While I appreciate my work’s suggestion of systems and networks, the paintings are meant not as illustrations or analogies, but actual imperfect and irreproducible hand-made objects. My work is concerned with clarity, with truth to materials and to methods, and it is meant to be a reflection and record of my decisions at a given moment in time.
