Cauliflauer Heads
artist: Fawn Krieger

so i was going through this phase of painting american ladies from the late 1930s in contemporary beauty pageant lineups with ed mcmahons in the foreground. i felt this urge to get closer to the ladies, to be in the same space as them, to share the same space with them. i suppose i was wondering what it felt like to be an american woman living through war. so i tried to make them 3-dimensional. CAULIFLAUER HEADS is my semi-failed attempt. i created a contoured silhouetted shape, intending to paint them in, but i couldn't resist the urge instead, to paint these cacti-like forms over shiny white, melted ice-cream style paint dollops. i sometimes throw my meaningless diversions in the garbage, but i've always enjoyed the chunky substantialness of this graphic sculpture. and i can't help but feel that diversions should stay in the world the most sometimes, even though they're often the hardest to face. this diversion is made out of wood, chicken wire, paper mache, enamel and oil paint.
