I did this drawing in art school. The assignment was for the students to draw portraits of each other. Each student took a turn posing on the modeling stage and we had three minutes to render a study. We were given india ink and big brushes attached to foot long sticks to draw with. I found these portraits among my things a few years ago and discovered that I quite liked them, so I decided to repurpose them by selecting the best ones and then scanning and scaling them down (the original drawings were much larger and done on newsprint). I then reprinted them and decided to show the prints in a solo exhibition which I titled, "All the People in the World." Some of the things I like: The looseness and difficulty of working with a long handled brush, as Brice Marden did in his calligraphic 'Cold Mountain' paintings was interesting. It is a technique I still employ in my underpaintings. When I first came back to the drawings, I found I could attribute different personality traits to the sitters, based only on my quick renderings. The concept of congition within a short time span and with only a little given information is one I explore in my work, so these pieces tie in very neatly although they appear to be a complete departure from my usual abstract work. Archival inkjet print on velvet fine art paper, from original drawing in series "All the People in the World." Edition of 10 prints, signed by artist. Originally exhibited at Hotel Rouge, Washington DC (2005).
